Birthdays can be tough, can’t they? Whether it’s thinking about things you’ve lost, or people not here anymore, getting a year older can always bring with it a depth of feeling. One of our fave sad-pop purveyors Kings Elliot has nailed that feeling today on a gorgeously morose offering, ‘ It’s My Birthday’, a track dropping, aptly, on her birthday. Deeply personal songwriting and spellbinding vocals, the track is a welcome return from an artist who recently opened for Lana Del Rey at Hyde Park. Speaking on the track, Kings Elliot states:
This song explores the thoughts I have when the demons trapped in my head take over… they seem to get especially noisy on a day like my birthday. It’s a day that carries a lot of pressures with it; subconscious stress caused by expectations of how you’re supposed to feel and act on that day. You should be happy, you should be social, you should celebrate. The light that shines on these days only makes me see my darkness more starkly, reminding me of how different I am.”
