What to look for in a Wedding Day Watch as a Groom

Man looks at a watch on his hand

If you’re getting married, then it’s only natural to want to look your best on the day. This means tracking down the right suit, getting the right haircut, polishing your best shoes, and, ideally, strapping on the right wristwatch.

A good watch isn’t just a stylish decorative item that’ll match everything you wear, and serve you for long after your nuptials are concluded. It’s also something that’s immensely practical, and perfect for those who’d like to avoid looking at their phone screen unless it’s absolutely necessary.

What do you need to think about before purchasing?

Picking out the right watch can be difficult. At the bottom of it all, you’ll be listening to your personal taste. On the other hand, there are a few practical things that everyone would do well to bear in mind before making the purchase.

Budget

This is arguably the most important consideration, and the one you should be making before you’ve looked at any of the options. Set your budget, and don’t even window-shop outside of it. This will ensure that you’ve got as much wriggle room as possible for the rest of the wedding itself. There’s no point in taking a premium-quality watch to a substandard wedding, after all.

Timeframes

Certain premium-quality watches will come with waiting lists. Make sure that you visit the retailer in question well ahead of time, that you inspect the product and that you put your order in. That way, you’ll avoid stress and disappointment. You don’t want to make compromises if you should spot a watch that you really like the look of.

Where it the wedding?

Wristwatches might not be a great match for every environment. They’re sensitive to humidity and temperature, and vulnerable to knocks and scratches. This goes especially if you’re having an outdoor wedding on the seafront, or if you’re going to be travelling a long distance to get to your wedding ceremony.

Consider you personality

You might find that you already have an instinctive preference for one category of watch or another. Use this to narrow down the field. If you’ve seen a quality Tag Heuer watch that’s caught your eye, then ask in the shop about similar alternatives. It might be that you finally settle on the watch you initially liked, or it might be that you can get something similar.

Interests and hobbies

A good watch is an investment that will last for decades. Think about how it might serve your personal interests and hobbies. Do you want something that will cope with stress and sports, or that will track your heart rate? Or, is it going to sit in a safe after you’re done with it? The future of the watch should inform the kind of watch you buy.
